And the only popular games with fake car brands, that aren't launch titles or rely on nostalgia like Ridge Racer, have some huge gimmick - like the Burnout series. My opinion, of course.Ĭlick to expand.tldr: Fast & Furious was cool and every racing game tried to copy it, and that hurt Ridge Racer and made it not cool.Īfter The Fast and the Furious came out (2001 onwards), just about every single arcade racer that released, was about real cars and / or tuning or tuner culture. Tldr: R4 was a good game, it just thoroughly lacked the challenge of the other Ridge games, which is essential to the series.

The DLC model, plus the fact that the game ran at a lower framerate than the PSP version, were real bummers. I can't argue on the Vita version though. And I continued to enjoy R4's soundtrack in my car =)

And then RRV came out and all was right again. Truthfully, I spent more time with the included 60fps version of the original Ridge Racer than with R4 itself (over 15 hours according to my save file). I got bored long before I unlocked everything. It took significantly less skill to perform drifts in R4 than in any other entry, and with only 7 racers to pass, the game just became way too easy.

My issues with it are the significant reduction in the number of opponents per race-from 13 down to 7-and the complete dumbing-down of the drift physics.

They even managed to pull off something of a storyline in an arcade racing game, which was a feat in itself. The course design was as consistently good as ever, and the sense of speed was awesome as usual, especially on the oval course. It's one of PS1's best-looking games in any genre, and the soundtrack is god-tier. Bah, Type 4 is the weakest in the series.Īesthetically, it was fantastic in every way possible.
